Meridians

In this section we start with the  basics. What are coordinates. What is Latitude and Longitude.

We find that Latitude is measured in  degrees north or south of the Equator and that Longitude is measured east or  west, a maximum of 180 degrees from the Prime (or Greenwich) Meridian.

Then we move on to the two basic types of chart, Mercator and Gnomonic.  Which will you need? What information will you find on them.

We look at the tools you’ll need and there are videos and step-by-step example of how to use them.  Parallel Rules, Dividers, Protractors etc.

We look at the Compass Rose, - measuring distance, how to plot a position, depths, nature of the sea bed, chart corrections, tidal details etc.

We also look at lights - the various types, how to identify them, colours, how they flash and why

The section finishes with a list of questions with all the answers in a separate section showing you exactly how you would measure up in an exam.

Each section is self-contained and, by the time you finish sections 1, 2 and 3 you will be able to navigate.
